Ports are not the limit, the budget is
Sixteen POE ports do not mean sixteen cameras at full power on long runs. Check the total POE budget of the recorder against the sum of the camera draw, and add the voltage drop on the longest cable.
Where the budget is tight, an external POE switch on a short run to the recorder is cheaper than a bigger recorder, and it keeps the camera count where the site needs it.
Disk and retention at this size
Sixteen channels at 4MP and two weeks of retention is a disk question with a single formula: bitrate times channels times hours times days. H.265+ moves that number down, event recording moves it down further, and both have to be set on the recorder rather than hoped for.
State the retention in days in the enquiry. It is the one input that changes the disk, the recorder and sometimes the camera resolution.
Recording across buildings
A site with two buildings usually means two cable runs and one recorder, which is fine until lightning or a digger separates them. Keep the recorder in the building with the cameras that matter most, and treat the second building as a separate recorder that reports to the same interface.
For a control room across many sites, the aggregation VMS takes up to 1024 channels, and the limit there is the link between sites rather than the recorder.
